    The famous 19th century Complex of Hue Monuments is here. It is one of Vietnam’s 8 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Originally the seat of power of the Nguyen Dynasty, it stands surrounded by a walled moat and includes the Imperial City, Forbidden Purple City, once home for the Emperor and a replica of the Royal Theatre.

    The town stands on the North bank of the iconically named Perfume River. The river gets its name from the fact that in autumn times, flowers from orchards drop into the water, upstream from the city and give the whole area perfumed air.

    Just along the river from the city there are many other monuments, including the tombs of Emperors Minh Mạng, Khai Dịnh, and Tu Duc and the Thien Mụ Pagoda, the largest pagoda in Hue and also the official symbol of the city.

    It is from here that day excursion to the Demilitarised Zone (The DMZ) from The Vietnam War. There are also many famous theatres of battle from the war. Hué now receives approximately 2.5 million visitors per year and many come for these important sites. A large part of the Stanley Kubrick film Full Metal Jacket was filmed in and around the bombed-out ruins of the city.
