Annual speech by the Singaporean PM

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced several measures to keep housing affordable and to encourage Singaporeans to have more babies in his National Day Rally speech on Sunday evening (Aug 23). In his wide-ranging speech at the Institute of Technical Education’s College Central campus, Mr Lee laid out the challenges Singapore has faced over the last 50 years and how the country overcame them. He said Singapore’s success has been built on a set of key principles including multi-racialism, self-reliance and mutual support. These fundamentals have made Singapore special, and staying special will ensure the country’s success.

To achieve that, Mr Lee said Singapore must be alive to the external environment, improve education and maintain life-long learning and ensure that no one is left behind. He said the Government has been working hard to meet the basic needs of Singaporeans, keeping necessities such as food, transport, healthcare and housing affordable for all.
